I think we all know what War Bridles are... If you don't it is a rope bridle that works by wrapping the rope and tying a knot on the underside of a horse's chin. The pressure is ALL put onto the lower jaw... Yeah not fun....But it gets worse!!!
There is another bridle that some people use as a method of restraint and yes some still ride in it, and it's called the "Bonaparte" or "Cherokee" Bridle... It works by not only having the rope wrapped around the lower jaw for pressure, BUT ALSO puts pressure on both the top and bottom gums of the horse!!!! YEEEEEIKES! They say it can be used for really "rank" horses and stallions that need to be taught a lesson *Gulp* Or for horses receiving medical treatment... Um.. OK, When the rope or reins are pulled it immediately puts pressure on the gums, lower jaw and poll of your horse... I swear I am really unsure of who could, in good conscious, use this. Light hands, soft hands, this is devastation waiting no no ASKING to happen....

O my! What are people thinking? I couldn't imagine using this on one of my horses. Can you imagine how many dumb people have ruined their horses with these things?
Poor horse. :( Even my amateur, non-horsey eyes can see that would hurt like HELL. :(

No wonder it's called a War Bridle.
Horse will battle that BS.
It's used only for the rank, and the dangerous, and it's barbaric.
Just like whomever made the horse rank and dangerous, in the first place.
A lip chain, yes.
A be-nice halter, yes.
A head-squeezing vice that also shanks both gums, a place where a simple massage can calm many a horse...
I want to sit down with a person who uses this and really get their success rate. I imagine they'd describe many of the horses as too rank to fix and sent to slaughter. After they, as GoLightly pointed out, created the monster in their image.
I was told at one time that an under the lip/on the gums chain was good for giving horses shots because it's a pressure point that releases those feel good chemicals. I've never used it and I had a mare that just about flipped over even after sedation (teeth float and shots at the same time). I just had a super awesome vet that has seen it all before and knew all the tricks in the book to get the job done.
Damn that bridle looks painful.
I would actually feel guilty if I ever used that on a horse.
No wonder some horses go batshit on people...
Using a chain or constant pressure is not the same thing as touching or massaging a pressure point.
Unless massage parlors have added chains to the hot stones and padded tables?
A lip chain works with fear of pain, works like a charm in fact, and used sparingly and thoughtfully is a good tool. But it is wishful thinking to tell yourself it is relaxing the horse.
Like to watch some yahoo put that thing on one of my Ay-rabs. Might just be able to sell tickets to that show, because little Ay-rab is not going to take that sitting down, 'er standing up. Once that tightened up on them, the boxing gloves would come of and they'd be ready for battle. Once their blood is "up", they no longer would be using the thinking part of their brain. Yikes!
