Fried...

It has been hot hot hot here in Seattle! I almost think I've been magically transported to Arizona it's so dang hot. Never the less the training must go on. Although when it gets this roasty toasty I am forced into doing one of two things. First I can ride at night, I'm a huge nightowl so o big for me, or I can train on the trail. OOOOOH just as fun! So what can you do on a trail as far as training goes???

Well, I do a lot of leg work on the trails, side passing around solid obstacles that my knee could potentially crack into if not done properly. Hill work, desensitizing, work in water and streams. Stepping over logs. Working on all three gaits PROPERLY even though there is a lack of arena walls. Ahhhh it's a nice thing!! It breaks the monotony of the arena and gets us out in the wide open. It's great for the horses as well, it gives them something else to concentrate on and see new things. So What do you like to do on the trails???

Oh and here is something I just thought was funny, from cuteoverload.com AHAHAHA It's so cute!!

I do just about all my training on the trails, because my Feather hates arena work. The big thing I need to work on is getting off and back on out on the trails. Yikes. And I do mean get off, like an organized, planned dismount. Not the thing I did last time into the briar patch. Ouch.

It's funny that your post is about trails because I did just that today! I went on a little adventure with my horse - we followed the roads and learned to be desensitized to pavement, train tracks, passing traffic, cherry pickers, scary drive-ways, and those darned horse-eating traffic signs. We only had one meltdown (which is quite excellent for my Arab)!

i always work with lead changes on the trails in open fields. when i ride with friends and we canter i work on keeping my jumpers pace consistant instead of him acting like hes in the kentucky derby everytime we canter with people. he always has to win lol. i will also jump fallen logs and ditches. cross streams rivers...etc.
the bugs here in PA are HORRIBLE! i cant ride during the day at all without being attacked. even in the woods!

I like to do side passing up and down hills and over and across logs. Lots of stopping and let the other horses go ahead and walk, trot etc. only when I ask, not just because the other horses do it. Stopping in the middle of the trail and ask for neck flexing. Backing up and down hills -backing or side passing in and out of water.
95% of what I do is on the trails (endurance riding)so my boy needs to be able to do everything no matter where we are or who we are with or if I'm mounted or from the ground. Getting on and off - over and over - and not move an inch until told - no matter how far ahead his buddies are. Pick up all 4 feet - random order. And, yes, the people I ride with think I'm crazy :-)

It's been over a hundred here in Texas for the past two months. Usually it gets down to the 80s by the evening, but it doesn't really get any cooler than 95 until around 10:00 PM. It's insane! Riding ANYWHERE is not fun lol! But it should get better by the fall....

I've been meaning to take Greta on the trails behind our facility that's owned by a cattle rancher friend. I will be excited to see how she does! It will definitely break the monotony of the arena and I'm sure miss former polo pony will like being out in the open again!
