If You Say So....

So at the horse show we went to this weekend we saw a paint PONY that was being cantered under saddle, with a very tall rider in the warm ring, for at least 45 minutes straight!!! Even the trail judge commented on it, saying "WOW, she is really working that pony hard." It was funny because I noticed something off about that pony, you know it was really slender and VERY leggy, but really it's none of my business either.

So anyway, when it was time for our next class and we were waiting in the warm up ring to go in, I over head the lady riding the pony, now covered in sweat, that this was a full blown reg. Paint HORSE!! She was small because she wasn't quite even TWO years old and she'd been under saddle for at least 3 months!! I almost fell off my own damn horse.... Now I know that race horses are broke young and a lot of QH and Paint's are too so they make their futurity, so to each their own I don't break until 3, but that's also me... But this was damn INSANE!! The horse's chest was so narrow and she was so young looking with her small slender frame the whole outfit, tack, rider and all just looked damn silly.

It is apparent however how common this actually is, that people ride the tar out of their young ins... Here, go to this website... http://www.lazyt.net/horsetraining.htm

There is a two yr old STALLION being ridden by a guy who recently had a STROKE and is trying to regain his balance... WTF are these "Trainers" thinking??? Poor guy had a stroke and you're going to give him lessons on a 2 yr STUD horse? There are some other just BEYOND Ghastly pictures on their site as well.. Like the picture of a white ratty looking horse jumping over a pile of junk buckets and other crap. It looked like he was cornered, or something. OH! And there is no such thing as 17.5hh HORSE! The hand system stops at 4. Soooo I think what they MEAN to say is 18.1hh. Hell I don't even know... These people call themselves Trainers and a Farm. Well only if you say so....

Their comment about the 2-year-old stallion carrying the stroke recoverer says something about wishing them many happy miles.

Um...not likely at that rate.

This drives me crazy. I don't love the whole futurity at 3 idea, but 7/9 did the futurity thing.

If you've ever owned a futurity horse after the fact, they really aren't broke per say. They don't have all that much time put on them and certainly less put on outside of the arena. Most of the trainers I know have anywhere from 90 days to 9 months on those colts.

I'm not qualified to comment on racehorses, but I don't think 110lbs total galloping basically a straight line for a few minutes really counts as "breaking" a horse.

I think less experienced/less educated people use the futurity/racehorse idea as a cop out to start horses too hard and way too early.

OK I just looked at the website and sorry, but jumping a horse with a rope lead on its neck over tubs flipped open side up is more than I can take.

Hehe.. I think you mean 18.1hh for a "17.5" ( 4 inches to the hand)

Cannot believe the amount of people I know who feel it is ok to break a rising 2yo. They defend it to the hilt with "I've never had any problems" Maybe because you sell on at 4yo! Can't grasp why... oh that's right MONEY MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND...

Hatefull.

"I can usually saddle them without being tied at all"

Wow - they are good - not!!

Awful. What do people have against spellchecker when posting on their website? Most of the photos are pretty crappy too.

In my opinion, a two year old can be started under saddle (getting it used to weight and reigns, some trotting, mostly getting brakes and steering and basic commands, etc.), then should be given time to grow up before work begins, such as cantering or extended periods of trotting. 45 minutes of CANTERING on a YEARLING is like forcing a two year old to lift weights; you'll wind up either killing or crippling it.

At two years old my filly knew a saddle and minimal weight in the stirrups. Not her damned back! People are ridiculous these day, the faster they're trained the quicker they get money just 'cause a youngster knows more than an untrained 3 year old.

Some folks need to be kicked in the head for starting youngsters so early. It's messed up.

I want to do reining and all the decent reiners have been started at the prime age of 2.

Idiots, idiots, idiots.

My 3 year old (in April) still looks like a baby, odds are I won't start her fully 'til she's nearly 4. But then again I'm not out for money with her.

People *sigh*

I just saw a gal riding her yearling. She said it wouldn't hurt him. She's getting him ready for the two year old classes, so of course she started him under saddle 4 months ago. We also got the "pleasure" of watching hubby repeatedly kicking it in the stomach when it was "resisting the bit". Makes you wonder why they call them "pleasure" classes doesn't it?
Got to watch another gal barrel racing her yearling. Nice - not!

I especially love the picture of the draft one (aka mr 17.5 hands) with the bareback pad on about a foot too far back..

I always figured 17.5 was some stupid way of saying 17.2 (17 and 1/2 hands, using ".5" it say 1/2). Who knows? either way, it is not correct ?nominclature?

What a shame! If the owners could just wait and let their fillies and colts grow and mature, then in the long run they would own a sound horse.

I've owned my App. (the one in my siggy) Little Big Man since he was weaned from his dam. He is turning 12 years old this June, and has never taken a lame step! I have taken my time training him, and he loves his job!

Went to their web site. Very first photo of a guy riding a buckskin...
1.) he's holding the reins like a first time rider would, in thru the top out from the bottom.
2.) they says she might be bred..of COURSE she is!

Typical.

Oh dear. I didn't go far enough into the web site.Of course there had to be the "dork standing on the barely broke horse" photo. You have to including one of those photos on your web site to prove your a "real" trainer. And the poor narrow white thing trying to escape jumping the jump by leaping over the pile of crap that is supposed to prevent him from ducking out around the jump. Love the swinging rope to get a caught on something and the pile of sharp edged board at knee heights. Zowsier!
