Good Ol Days

So there was an ad out on CL a couple days ago where a gal was looking for her horse. Apparently she had sold the horse to a girl and the girl dissapeared off the face of the earth after only paying $20 towards the horse. And the owner was trying to find the girl and her horse. Well, a lot of people including yours truly, knew of the reputation of the girl who dissapeared and so we contacted the owner via CL and gave her alot of great leads. Now, before we move on there is a back story. The girl who know has the horse is nototirous for STARVING horses and then begging people to help her pay the vet to have the horse put down. Well Owner A. Didn't know that at the time she sold the horse to a horse starver.

So anyway Owner gal is able track down H.S. (Horse Starver) and emails her telling her that she wants her horse back as the H.S. refuses to pay. So now it's all legal and the police department say Owner has every right to go and get her horse so long as she contacts the police department in the county where H.S. is. Great right? No, not yet. The OTHER police dept. says that H.S. is in an unincorperated part of the county and they can't do anything. If she steps on the property Owner will get arrested for trespassing on H.S.'s property. They basically tell her that H.S. is a THEIF and they will have to battle it out in court... WOW...

So, What if that was you?? What if you tried your hardest to make sure your horse was going to a good home and then find out you were wrong? What if they dissapear off the face of the earth?? Then what would you do???

Do you also remember the Good Ol Days??? You know what used to happen to horse theives??

Sheriff's office is usually County, so try them. Get the brand inspector involved, stalk the B...ch and take pictures from the road or someone else's property, make a theft report and make sure it's put on file, talk to the county courthouse and see if you can drag her into small claims court or file a lien, or get a court order. Most of the secretarial staff usually are great at pointing you in the right direction. Did she transport across state or County lines with all paperwork correctly? Ask some of the equine vets in the area for advice. It's still illegal to drown people like that, more's the pity....

I gave one of our horses to a lady who promised him a forever home. Needless to say after it's said and done I can't believe we did it. Not even a month later she called and said he died of lung worms. BS. Now she's impossible to get ahold of and notorious for horse trader behavior and is notorious for going to the auctions.

I have yet to find my gelding after a year of knuckle bleeding looking.

I really hope this Owner gets her horse back. No one should go through what she's going through.

I'm sorry, but anyone who thinks I'll let one of mine go if they only slap down $20 needs their head examined. Mine won't be rehomed, anyway. They are with me or in the ground especially now that the economy is tanking. This might not be popular, but it's the only way i can guarantee they'll be safe and looked after.

As much as I should not say this on freaking Internet....if it was me, I would be stalking that girl and watching for a good time to steal my horse back. Screw the law in that situation.

I know of a number of people who snuck in after dark and took their horse back and nothing was ever done in any of the cases as the guilty party didn't have a leg to stand on in court. Even after alot of threats and scary confontations between buyer and seller. What were they going to say, "Sherrif, arrest this person for repro'ing their horse that I never paid for."

Scary situation - I get way too attached to my horses (and my rescue cats - lol). So I only have one (or two) horses at a time. But if I ever HAD to sell, I would do WHATEVER it took to bring them back to safety.

Amen Lulu - that is exactly what I would do to. Let them fight me in court... Once I got the horse back, I would board the horse in a completely different county until statue of limitations ran out.

Andulusian, I agree with you. They're with me till the end, or humanely euthanized and put in the ground!
If I was the seller of the $20 horse, I'd hire a good lawyer.
